Azilal rugs are made in the Azilal area from virgin raw wool. The unique hand-weaving technique of the area is only used by the women of Azilal region. Mothers have been passing down these cultural rituals to daughters during generations.
The rugs of Azilal province are rare. Their wool is usually finer, creating a luxury soft surface for the rugs. The rugs feature geometric patterns with beautiful colours. The creativity of artisans appears in Azilal rugs: they combine irregular and abstract patterns with Berber symbols and diamond-shaped patterns.
The women of the region tell their stories in the rugs. Rural life, maternity and childbirth are common topics in the patterns. Weavers appropriate tribal signs of their ancestors to express their wedding, pregnancy and daily lives.
